Implementation of Programmatic Life-Cycle Cost Analysis in a TAM Framework (NCHRP 02-26) | Research Report
The objective of this research is to develop guidance coupled with one or more prototypical, analytical model(s) to support life-cycle planning and decision-making that applies life-cycle cost analysis as a component of a system-wide transportation asset management program. This guidance and associated analytical model(s) will apply quantitative asset-level, project-level, and network-level inputs to demonstrate methods for calculating life-cycle costs associated with alternative scenarios while taking into account preservation, rehabilitation, replacement, maintenance, and potential risk mitigation actions on a range of highway assets. Â
Guidelines for Collecting, Applying, and Maintaining Pavement Condition Data at Airports | Research Report
This report provides guidance on the collection, use, maintenance, and application of pavement condition data at airports. Such data include conditions that are visually observed as well as those that are obtained by mechanical measurement or other means. Visually observed distresses on a pavement surface (such as cracking, rutting, patching, and spalling) are widely used and accepted as indicators of pavement performance.
A Guide to Developing Financial Plans and Performance Measures for Transportation Asset Management (NCHRP Report 898) | Research Report
Asset ManagementThis report presents guidance for state departments of transportation (DOTs) and other agencies conducting financial analyses and developing financial plans to support efficient and effective management of the agency’s transportation assets.
Common Performance Metrics for Airport Infrastructure and Operational Planning | Research Report
This report serves as a reference guide and introduces common performance metrics for airport infrastructure and operational planning. The reference guide includes information on how to interpret performance metrics that can be used for analysis among airports, airlines, and air traffic control.
Analyzing Data for Measuring Transportation Performance by State DOTs and MPOs | Research Report
This synthesis report summarizes what data state departments of transportation (DOTs) and metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs) are using and how they are measuring transportation performance. This report synthesizes current knowledge and practice about data management to help transportation organizations learn about effective practices. The report also identifies future research needs.
Performance Measures in Snow and Ice Control Operations | Research Report
This report presents approaches for monitoring the performance of snow and ice control activities by public agencies and proposes a core set of performance measures that can be customized and used by agencies to meet their snow and ice control objectives.
Geotechnical Asset Management for Transportation Agencies, Volume 1: Research Overview (NCHRP Report 903) | Research Report
Asset ManagementThis report provides an introduction and scalable guidance for state transportation agencies on how to implement risk-based geotechnical asset management into current asset management plans. Volume 1, Research Overview, details the scope, process, and findings of the study.
Automated Pavement Condition Surveys (NCHRP Synthesis 531) | Research Report
Asset Management, PavementThis synthesis report documents agency practices, challenges, and successes in conducting automated pavement condition surveys. The report also includes three case examples that provide additional information on agency practices for conducting automated pavement surveys.
Geotechnical Asset Management for Transportation Agencies, Volume 2: Implementation Manual (NCHRP Report 903) | Research Report
Asset ManagementThis report presents a manual that can be used to implement Geotechnical Asset Management (GAM) planning.
There are several downloadable files that accompany Volume 2.

Implementing the U.S. DOT Reasonable Modification Rule | Case Study/Practice Example
AccessibilityThis synthesis report assembles and shares the current state of practice for the implementation of the 1990 ADA regulation in transit systems. It documents examples from six transit systems as they make modifications to support individuals with disabilities and meet the expectations of the legislation. It also mentions future research needs in this area.
Performance Measures in Snow and Ice Control Operations | Research Report
System PerformanceThis report outlines approaches for monitoring performance for snow and ice control activities, and suggests a set of performance measures that should be used in the monitoring process.
