In this video captured at the 2020 TRB annual meeting—Victoria Sheehan Commissioner of the New Hampshire DOT and AASHTO’s 2019-2020 vice president leads a panel discussion on the importance of asset management. Asset Management is a strategic approach that is helping state DOTs make smarter decisions about when and where to conduct maintenance on assets, including highways, bridges, pedestrian walkways, bike routes and in some cases airports and passenger rail systems to save time and money.

Using Small Starts funding from the National Institute for Transportation and Communities (NITC), the University of Utah has produced a suite of visual analysis tools for state DOTs and other agencies. The research team, led by Dr. Nikola Markovic, utilizes GPS trajectory data to model and analyze mobility trends through interactive online animations. To demonstrate the tool's value to interested agencies, the team purchased one month of Utah trajectory data to run their software on; sample graphics of their results are included in this article.

This plan considers the current trends, the priorities of Iowa DOT, and the condition of the system to formulate a set of strategies and improvements to guide Iowa's transportation investment through 2045. It also includes an analysis of the funding needs and challenges facing transportation in Iowa, and it describes how the state plans to monitor their performance.

The Nevada long range plan establishes a framework for making informed decisions around transportation investment for Nevada's metropolitan planning organizations, regional transportation commissions, local governments, modal transportation providers, and NDOT. It supports six goal areas which include enhancing safety, preserving infrastructure, optimizing mobility, transforming economies, fostering sustainability, and connecting communities. This plan was first published in 2018 and received minor updates in 2020 to reflect the wishes of the new administration.

This research report presents a snapshot of the trends facing public transportation and tested strategies for counteracting transit ridership decreases. The research method includes a literature review, analysis of current transit ridership levels, and ten case studies.

This publication examines the use and integration of GIS into the asset management practices of local Minnesota transportation agencies and provides recommendations and case studies for agencies at differing stages of implementation.

This guide covers all aspects of consolidated asset management for smaller groups, from getting started with the approach to an overview of software programs, the benefits of life-cycle cost analysis, and the need for risk management. More specifically, this guide provides guidance in developing an asset inventory and condition assessment, establishing performance measures and goals, identifying and rating risk, determining lifecycle planning and funding strategies, and creating asset management plans and programs using existing and new resources.

This publication recommends software applications that can automate and improve transit asset management processes and decisions.

This report summarizes the proceedings of the 2019 Transportation Performance Management (TPM) Peer Exchange sponsored by the Transportation Performance Management Pooled Fund, led by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (DOT). The peer exchange was held in St. Paul, Minnesota on November 14-15, 2019 and focused on how transportation agencies are implementing TPM in light of federal requirements and advancing TPM and performance-based planning and programming (PBPP) practice. The purpose of the peer exchange was to provide participants an opportunity to share their experiences implementing TPM and to discuss related best practices, including how to resource and align their internal performance management systems with federal requirements. They also discussed current communication challenges and the future of TPM. The primary goal of this peer exchange was to advance the state of the TPM practice, particularly by sharing lessons learned.
